My name is Brandon Pettey. I am a member of the Theta Pi chapter at UT Tyler. I am not the typical fraternity type. I am not a big sports fan and I didn't used to like being in large groups of people. However, when I transferred into UT Tyler I was approached by a nationals rep, they were working on colonizing our chapter.
He showed me the video for Push America on his laptop and instantly I was hooked. I was born with Spina Bifida and I've been in a wheelchair all my life. The idea of being apart of an organization that helps people with disabilities, and even owns their philanthropy seemed like an obvious decision.
Being a pi kapp has given me the opportunity to help people, as I've been helped throughout my life. I've been apart of fundraisers for individuals with disabilities and done speeches on disability awareness. It feels amazing to not just get help but also give help.
The brotherhood has also been amazing. At the previous college I attended, I felt like I wasn't getting the real college experience. I had friends and we hung out on campus but when it came to going anywhere, I stayed behind because I don't have a vehicle. My brothers would never even think about leaving me behind. If they go somewhere, they make sure I go. They go to such extremes as carrying me in my chair up stairs, lots of them. When I say my Pi Kapp brothers, I mean it. My brothers are family to me. Being a Pi Kapp has helped me experience life.
