Why I Joined/The Founding of Theta Pi

My name is Matthew Adam, I was born in Canada and lived there until I was about 8, then moved to Arlington, Texas, where I spent the rest of my childhood.

I was a type 1. I loved movies like Animal house, Van Wilder, College, etc, and that is what I thought fraternities were; Just a bunch of college guys who like to party. Fortunately I found so much more than that with Pi Kappa Phi.

Entering as a freshman at a new school can be very exciting and scary, especially when you move to a different city for school. I moved out to Tyler, about 2 hours from Arlington. The University of Texas at Tyler. It's not a well known school as it is fairly new. The university used to be a senior university (i.e. junior and seniors only) until in the last decade they changed that. So the school is fairly new, so were fraternities and sororities.
My tour guide for the campus was actually not affiliated with the Greeks, but I remember when he was talking about the only 2 we had on campus at the time, he mentioned Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Pi Kappa Phi. Of course I didn't know a think about fraternities or chapters or anything Greek, I just knew I wanted to be one. So I rushed.

The weeks leading up to Rush I had met most of the Pi Kapps through various occasions. It all started with Ben Satterwhite (Coach), if he hadn't asked me to come hangout with the guys all the time, I may not have joined. I met the guys, loved them all, so naturally I rushed Pi Kapp.

Rush at our school is a little different than most schools I would imagine since our IFC is newly founded. It was basically the rushees would go into a room, watch a presentation, meet the guys, and move to the next room. Fairly boring, but I did get to meet the other fraternity on campus and their members, which simply reaffirmed me to Pi Kappa Phi :D

Anyway, looking back today, I would not change a thing. I have so many memories with my brothers: Homecoming, Formals, Camp-Outs, Dinners, Socials, Parties, Mud Bug Bash, South Padre, and even just sitting with a few brothers and telling stories. I love everything about Pi Kappa Phi and I will be a Pi Kapp until I die.

God Bless Pi Kappa Phi
(and Theta Pi Chapter)
